The wintering party comprised 24 expeditioners. The station's scientific program was maintained while a four-year construction program of Repstat began at a site 2.4 km (or 1.8km) south of the station. The new buildings, to replace Wilkes, were specifically designed to overcome problems of excessive snow drift.
