The station, staffed by 19 Australians and four Americans, continued a joint scientific program. New scientific equipment was installed including a cosmic ray neutron monitor and a laboratory for cosmic ray and glaciological research. The outstanding achievement of the year was a four-man 2850 km traverse from Wilkes to Vostok and return led by R B Thomson. A program of glaciological and geophysical investigations extended the knowledge of the ice sheet of this previously unexplored region.
