Meteorologist John Zimmerman taking weather observation at Wilkes Station in 1958. Wilkes Station was one of seven U.S. research stations built for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), 1957-1958. The U.S. turned the station over to Australia in 1959. Several years later Australia built a new facility 2 km away and renamed it Casey Station.
