TITLE:
DESCRIPTION: The U.S. Navy used small tracked vehicles called 'weasels' during the early days of Operation Deep Freeze. This photo was taken at Wilkes Station in 1958. Wilkes was one of seven U.S. research stations built for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), 1957-1958. The U.S. turned the station over to Australia in 1959. Several years later Australia built a new facility 2 km away and renamed it Casey Station.
