DESCRIPTION: U.S. Navy Dr. Sparkes takes a blood sample from scientist Sebastian Borrello at Wilkes Station, Antarctica, 1958. Wilkes Station was one of seven U.S. research stations built for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), 1957-1958. The U.S. turned the station over to Australia in 1959. Several years later Australia built a new facility 2 km away and renamed it Casey Station.
