DESCRIPTION: Mechanic Auden "Ollie" Ommundsen in a Snow Rat at Wilkes Station, Antarctica, 1958. The Snow Rat was a small tracked vehicle built by Bombardier of Canada. It was powered by a 35 hp Volkswagen engine. Wilkes Station was one of seven U.S. research stations built for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), 1957-1958.
