Electronics Engineer Don Edman at the Ionosound, Wilkes Station, Antarctica. Wilkes Station was one of seven U.S. research stations built for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), 1957-1958. The ionosound transmitter sent radio beams to an altitude of about 50 miles where they then were reflected back to the ionosound receiver and analyzed to determine how high and dense the atmospheric layers were.
