Glaciologist Casey Cronk doing repair work at Site S2 in 1958. Site S2 was a weather and ice study station located about 80 km (50 miles) east of Wilkes Base in the late 1950s. The ice thickness at S2 was over 1,220 meters (4,000 feet). The base had an insulated Quonset Hut buried to the roof top. A tunnel extended 30 meters (16 feet) from the hut to a 10 meter (33 feet) deep ice pit to study ice cap movement. Site S2 was operated by men sent from Wilkes Station for 2-week rotations. Wilkes Station was one of seven U.S. research stations built for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), 1957-1958.
