DESCRIPTION: Geophysicist Sebastian Borrello works with the magnetometer at Wilkes Station in 1958. Borrello studied variations in the earth's magnetism and recorded magnetic storms. Wilkes Station was one of seven U.S. research stations built for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), 1957-1958. Borrello was one of thousands of scientists around the world who participated in this world-wide scientific collaboration.
