DESCRIPTION: Chief seismologist Dr. Henry Birkenhauer at the seismic recorder, Wilkes Station, Antarctica, 1958. In addition to being a scientist, Birkenhauer was a Jesuit priest and led mass for Wilkes Station personnel. Wilkes Station was one of seven U.S. research stations built for the International Geophysical Year (IGY), 1957-1958. The U.S. turned the station over to Australia in 1959. Several years later Australia built a new facility 2 km away and renamed it Casey Station.
