Severe ice conditions near Dumont d'Urville delayed Thala Dan's return from the first voyage. Very rough weather was encountered on the way to Casey. At Casey, personnel were changed over, stores were unloaded, sundry scientific and engineering installations were made, and a geological survey of the offshore islands and coastal features was achieved. The EPF party was embarked at Dumont d'Urville and very rough conditions were encountered on the return voyage, including a 50 degree roll.
