This voyage resupplied and officially took over for Australia the American IGY
station Wilkes on 4 February. The ship visited Lewis Island to overhaul the
automatic weather station and explored the unknown coast of Oates Land near
150 E where a landing was made on 20 February , the flag was raised and an
astrofix taken. Aerial reconnaissance using Auster aircraft was made.
On 2 February USS Staten Island embarked American personnel from Wilkes.
On board was Sir Raymond Priestly, official UK observer. Macquarie Island
was visited on the return passage.
